SoundToggl

Sound switcher and screenshot tray

SoundToggl started as one small job: switching the Mac's sound between two headsets and the laptop speakers without digging through Sound settings. It puts a dark bar of buttons in the bottom-left corner of the screen, sized to match the Dock, and each button sends the sound to that device at a sensible volume.

Version 2 added the desk helpers I kept wanting: a menu bar tray that pops open with each new screenshot, a history of the last 50 things you copied, a shelf that appears whenever you drag something, and a large preview when a new scan arrives from the iPhone. Everything stays on the Mac.

What it does

Inside SoundToggl

One click to switch sound

Four buttons: no sound, a wireless headset, a USB headset and the built-in speakers. Each one switches the Mac's output and sets a preset volume, and the first mutes everything.

Status dots at a glance

A green, orange or red dot on each button shows whether that device is plugged in and ready, or, for the speakers, how loud they are. A small badge shows whether the headset's microphone is muted.

Scroll to change the volume

Scroll over the bar to turn the sound up or down, with a short volume readout drawn right on the bar.

Screenshots in the menu bar

A tray of your newest screenshots and other files from folders you choose, grouped by day and searchable by name. A new screenshot is copied to the clipboard and the tray opens to show it, and shots taken a few seconds apart can be dragged out together.

Your recent clipboard history

Keeps the last 50 bits of text, images and files you copied. Click one to copy it again. Items that password managers mark as private are skipped.

A shelf for dragging

Start dragging anything and a shelf slides in at the right edge of every screen. Park files, pictures, links or text there, then drag them out one by one or all at once.

Good to know

  • The sound buttons are set up for my own gear: a Zone Vibe 125 wireless headset, a Jabra Evolve USB headset and a MacBook's speakers. Other headsets would need a change to the app.
  • The scan preview watches one particular iCloud folder used by an iPhone scanner app.
  • Nothing is sent over the internet: the clipboard history, screenshots and shelf stay on your Mac.
