HoweTopo

Hiking map for Howe Sound

HoweTopo is a topographic hiking map made for the mountains around Howe Sound and the Sea-to-Sky corridor. It opens on the Sound with contour lines and marked hiking trails, and lets you plan a route along the actual trail network before you head out.

On the trail it shows where you are, how far it is to your next waypoint and roughly how long it will take, and it can record your hike as a track. Map tiles are kept on the device, so you can load an area at home and still see it when the signal drops.

What it does

Inside HoweTopo

Topo maps with trails

OpenTopoMap contours with the Waymarked Trails hiking network on top, plus ESRI World Topo and OpenStreetMap styles to switch between.

Routes that follow the trails

Long-press to drop a waypoint, add stops, and it works out a walking route along the trail paths in OpenStreetMap, falling back to other walking directions when that fails. Each route shows its distance and total climb.

Elevation profile

A chart of every route's ups and downs, built from terrain elevation data. Waypoints show their own elevation and how far away they are.

Waypoints with a purpose

Mark peaks, campsites, water sources, viewpoints, trailheads and huts, each with its own icon and notes, then navigate to one or set it as a route's start or end.

Live position and ETA

Your altitude, speed, heading, distance and bearing to the next stop, and an arrival estimate based on your pace over the last 30 seconds.

Tracks and offline maps

Record a hike with its distance, climb and time, and keep a history of tracks and planned routes. Preload map tiles for Howe Sound, the current view, or 5 km around a planned route.

Good to know

  • A hobby map, not a safety tool: carry a paper map and compass, and check trail conditions before you go.
  • Maps, trail data and routing come from free online services such as OpenTopoMap, Waymarked Trails and OpenStreetMap, so anything not already saved needs a data connection.
  • Made for Howe Sound and the Sea-to-Sky. The map opens there and the one-tap download covers that area, but the maps work anywhere.
