alPlex

Plex player with offline downloads

alPlex is a Plex app for iPhone and iPad built around one idea: getting your shows onto the device before you leave. Browse the libraries on your own Plex server, stow a film, a season or a whole series, and watch later with no connection at all.

Downloads carry on in the background, the Downloads tab shows what is stowed and how much room is left, and the built-in player handles most video files, with swipes for scrubbing and brightness. A separate tab can also open a Stremio web player that you host yourself.

What it does

Inside alPlex

Your Plex libraries, tidied up

Browse the movie and TV libraries on your own Plex server. Shows are grouped into series, seasons and episodes, sorted A to Z or by what was added last.

Stow a season in one tap

Download a single film or episode, a whole season, a whole show or an entire library. Pick the original file, or a smaller 1080p or 720p copy that your server converts, with the original as a fallback.

Downloads that keep going

Downloads continue when the app is closed and failed ones are retried on the next launch. They stay on Wi-Fi by default and run one to three at a time.

Ready before you board

The Downloads tab shows everything stowed, with a bar for space used and space free, and posters saved for offline. With no connection the app opens straight to it, and a single button clears out what you have already watched.

A player steered by swipes

Swipe sideways to scrub, up or down for brightness, skip 30 seconds either way, and change speed from 0.75× to 2×. It starts where you stopped and marks an episode watched near the end.

Subtitles when you want them

While watching, search an online subtitle library and pick a language, and the lines appear over the picture.

Good to know

  • Needs your own Plex Media Server, and for most servers your Plex token.
  • The smaller 1080p and 720p downloads rely on your server converting the video. If it can't, the app downloads the original file instead.
  • Subtitles are searched on SubDL, an online subtitle site.
  • Not made by or affiliated with Plex.
